Resume Writing For the Ex Con

Resume writing and job hunting is work. No matter what your background is, there is one thing employers are looking for from ever applicant; assurance. They want as much assurance as possible that you will show up to work, can do the job, and will not become a liability.

In order to get that assurance and protect themselves as much as possible employers will collect resumes, conduct interviews, perform background checks, and have you jumping through hoops.

No matter who you are employers want assurance and if you are an ex con you will have to work even harder to reassure them. So what can you do? Lying will not help. When you are found out you will only get another black mark to overcome and with technology today can follow you forever.

First, work on your resume writing. Create the best resume you can that highlights your experience and what you have to offer. Use a cover letter that gets a call. If you have been incarcerated for a long period of time you can create skills resume that does not give a chronological order of your time but relates what job skills you have.

The interview is your chance to shine. When you arrive at any employer for an interview you do not need to reveal your history immediately, but do so before you leave. When you reveal your criminal history, include as many letters of recommendation as you can get your hands on. Previous employers, probation officers, priests or ministers can all help. If you need more references volunteer somewhere for awhile and build a solid reputation. When you leave the interview, shake the interviewer’s hand, look them in the eye, and give them a solemn promise. For instance, “hiring me will be one of the best decisions you will ever make,” or “You have the chance to help me show you my devotion and turn over a new leaf.”
