How To Improve Your English Writing Skills

It is one thing to say that you are good at writing and another thing to be actually good at it. Do you aspire to write the next Nancy Drew or do you aspire to become the next David Forster Wallace? Becoming a good writer takes a lot of practice even if you just want to do it for your hobby or for a living. However, with some hard work, you can achieve your goals.

Use strong words

Not only is good writing evocative, but it is also precise and spiced with the unexpected. Finding the right adjective or verb can turn a regular sentence into one that can be remembered and make them quote it for years to come. Look for words that are as specific as possible. Try to avoid repeating the same words over again so that the reader of your work is not bored. Bad writing is filled with “he answered” and “she responded.” You can never truly improve your writing skills unless you make an effort at it.

Learn grammar and style

You would never find a piece of work so good that would boggle your mind enough to overlook bad grammar. It is enough of an impediment that bad grammar can interrupt the flow of the work that you have written as well as the flow of the reader’s thoughts. People trying to build up their writing skills can become quite complacent and they try to avoid learning grammar because it is a lot of work. However, once you learn the rules and apply them to your writing, it will be easier to retain.

Read it aloud

Read out the work that you have written aloud. A good practice would be to read it aloud to someone else. This will greatly help you to make the necessary changes to your work. It can also help you in the other areas as well when you read it aloud since it can make you great at oral presentations in the future. When people hear your words, they can make you change the words and help you out.

Write often

Writing is pretty much like sports. You need practice in order to improve your writing skills. It is better to practice writing for at least 15 minutes every day. It will be easier to write new things every day when you practice writing. It will become a habit that you can dedicate yourself to eventually.
